Dawn of an old day

Okay. Kerry has to make a show of wanting every vote counted. That's his job after Gore stiffed us in the last election. The upside is that we know we're not alone in our view. But no surprise really that George won this time. He is the straw Americans grabbed in the moral aftermath of 9-11, their panic over the gay marriage revolt, the continuing rise for people of color, developments in technology and science, and as always, more and more women empowering themselves. But his fusing of politics and evangelicalism is a mere place holder, a stand-in for the eclectic moral compass we seek. It is a shallow pond in a time of deep thirst.

the continuing rise of people of color, developments in technology and science, and as always, the ongoing empowerment of women.I still don't understand why Republicans are considered to be in reaction against these things. The presence of Condi Rice alone ought to modify such hyperbole. The stem cell thing was about absolutism with regard to abortion, not science. Opposition to affirmative action is opposition to a system that Dr. King himself did not approve, its present form having taken a decade after his murder. There is conservatism, obviously, and in some corners a lot of it. But it's not so bad as all that.

However, I understand your disappointment and I agree with some of what you say about the results (and you're an excellent writer too), especially the fundamental emptiness of Bush's alleged moral compass. He's a dumb-ass as are many of his followers, and my vote followed a very complex and years-long philosophical development that never allows for much enthusiasm for the kinds of people that survive our primary system.

For now, let's just agree to disagree on your first paragraph. However, thanks for the compliment in the second! Actually, I always gave Kerry the 49% (at best). Just the way things are at the moment. However, "this too shall pass." :)

The American voice is hollow.

I don't understand why the left is so blinded by it's elitest views of anyone that sees the world differently than they. It's simplistic (arrogant) to claim all knowing and degrade others when it's apparent they havn't listened enough to really list the opponents view, honestly.
Many conservatives feel the schools have hijacked their rights - abortions without parental knowledge.
Affirmative Action - reverse discrimination and very unfair to those who have sacrificed to do the right thing while others who havn't get the rewards.
Scared of science - well, thats just tripe.
Smutty Television - not cute, creative, or conduscive to successful child rearing.
Personal responsibility ie; being held accountable just dosn't seem to matter anymore. criminals being treated like victims while the victim becomes suspect.

The election was decided on character and the need to stop rampant societal decay, not eliteism or status quo.

Scott,
Your comments reflect the very quality you criticize. They are simplistic. Also, they are extremely self-referential. You have a poor idea of who your fellow conservatives are. For starters, if Bush’s base has its way, creationism will replace evolution. Also, Bush doesn’t give a damn about scientific facts. The scientific community is outraged by his arrogant dismissals of extremely sensitive studies, such as reports on global warming. With scorn and great hubris, Bush refers liberals as the “reality-based community". But to say the election was decided on character is a tragic misunderstanding. The election was decided by fear of change, bigoted thinking and greed. You are gravely mistaken to assume that the neocons and evangelicals are the only ones with moral values or a social conscience.

Also, would it kill you to use a spell checker?
