No sloth. Lucky us.

Okay. Okay. So we haven't seen a sloth. I don't even care. Who wants to see one anyway? They're just big slow-motion show offs. Here in Costa Rica, they're a damn cliche. Everyone has seen a sloth. Lucky for us we haven't see one, especially on our big jungle walkabout yesterday. Eight hours squinting up into the canopy, camera ready, stumbling over roots, soaked with sweat but not one sloth. Whew! Close call.

One sauntered through the cafe when the Brits were having tea. Our German friend Marion saw one on her one and only two hour dash through the preserve and poor Ricardo and Marco had to brush a sloth off their car with a damn broom!

I don't know how we escaped their shenanigans. We are the only people here who haven't seen a sloth. Sometimes you just get lucky. As for the critter I photographed the other day, Pauline and Olaf said maybe it was a sloth but, come on, they were being kind. Surely it was a monkey. Nice people but clearly the sloth has drawn them into his little game of charades but I know better.

Then this little clown insisted our Dutch friend Pauline take his photo. Talk about a poser. I mean, really. With her kind permission, I include Pauline's photos here so that you'll know who to avoid should to find yourself in the neighborhood. As they say, to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

This always happens when you want it so bad like the time I wanted to give birth to a girl and had Reid but now I couldn't imagine having any baby but Reid he's the best.....so not seeing a sloth is a little blessing!

when we were in costa rica i wanted to see a sea turtle so so badly, but finally after 9 days of paddling desolate tropical beach waters with no luck, we gave up.

our last day we went to just lounge at the more populated beach without our snorkling equipment. of course, a drunken fratboy standing on the coral reef with a beer can, smoking, started yelling TORTUGA! TORTUGA! there is no justice.

i did see one, underwater and far away and plenty of roped off nests, but that was it.

Same with us. We tried to spot a roadrunner while driving through the extreme Southwest, with no luck. FInally I got this idea to attach these small rockets to a pair of roller skates . . . well, need I say it? Bad idea. Anyway . . . .

Looks like a Seuss character. Or a muppet from the early Sesame Street era. Cute!

Kimberlee: We indeed see not seeing the sloth as a blessing. Otherwise, what would we tell our friends in NV? "We went to the jungle and saw a really cute sloth"? WTF? It would be like saying we saw darling tortugas.

Kristiana: Yikes! That is a classic traveler's tale of woe.

Yes, it appears that sloths are 100% cutie pies but don't be fooled. They are as tricky are tortugas.

Roy? Was that you? All these years I though we'd actually seen a road runner. Now I don't know what to think.

Aileen: That's exactly what I thought about sloths... until they broke my heart. Oh wait! What am I saying? I'm glad I haven't seen a sloth. Really.

Maybe the important thing is a Sloth saw you...I'm pretty sure?!?

Because you're the superstars of the planet. I mean they're probably still talking about how to get their heads as shiny as M. Lee's!!!

Kimberlee, you are right. Probably 37 sloths saw us and by now all of them have traded photo ops with local barbers in exchange for buzz cuts so they can look like M. Lee.

Hello Asha! I must say I love looking at your blog. Lots of fun stuff.

I have a question for you: I saw the last photo of the sloth whose picture was taken by Pauline (posted last on your post "No sloth. Lucky us.") on another website and thought it was amazing. I would like to use a modified version of it on a t-shirt design for a contest but didn't want to use it without the permission of whoever took it. So after a little searching (well, after a lot of searching and with the help of Google's amazing "search by image" feature at images.google.com) I found your site and realized that I'd finally found a connection to the taker of the amazing picture!

There's no guarantee that the design would actually turn into a t-shirt because it's just a contest but if it did, I'd be sure to send you and your friend a shirt! :)

Let me know what you think and if that would be alright with you.

Thanks and have a great weekend/week,

John
