Yesterday was Baby Thea's first birthday. It was a very sweet day. She's a delightful, happy little girl. She's already walking, signing some (ASL) and definitely working on her English. She amazes and fascinates me. All in all, I was in Portland just over a week and left today. Now I'm back in Southern Oregon and not quite sure what's next. A friend and I are talking about going to the Bay Area together but we haven't worked out the details yet.
I've been out almost two weeks now and am just beginning to sense a little distance from my life. It feels good.

Glad you're having fun, and that you got to see Baby Thea's progress. I remember watching my son growing through that age, and thought it was very entertaining and fascinating. Seems like the words, that week, were Daddy, Abbey (the dog,) Mommy, up. Oh, and his first complete sentence was just around that time: "Mommy, don't sing." Everyone's a critic.
Say hi to the Bay Area for me.
Baby Thea is the crack cocaine of babies and I am so hooked. Your son's first complete sentence is hilarious. So did you win the race to the first word, ie. he said "daddy" first instead of "mommie"? Baby Thea has been under heavy prompt to say "mommie" first but she opted for the word "kitty" followed by the word (and sign) for "dog" although one might argue that those words are variations on the theme.
Happy 1st Birthday Baby T!!!
Reid says "dadadadaada" already but he's definitely not connected it to Ricardo. I'm pretty sure his first words will be "Diesel, No!" or "Diesel, SIT!
Glad you had a good time.
I think they were in that order: daddy, abby, mommy, up. I think I won. His second sentence, I do believe within a day or two of the first, as he spilled his food all over his tray, was "Mommy, help me." Just don't sing while you do it.
Kimberlee, I suspect dadadada is some kind of generic sound that is easy for babies to say, not that they can't, or shouldn't, recognize daddy first but Thea also says it about a lot of things. As for Reid, I'd add that among his first sentences will also be, Wanna swim, Diesel?"
Roy, congratulations. So, did you sneak whisper "daddy" in his ear while he slept or was the win honorable? K. is above nothing. She would be happy to win at any cost but M. Lee claims Thea already called him "favorite grandpa" when she was a mere two or three months old but there were no witnesses.
Yes, we began a collaboration that continues to this day! I also lay claim to being the first recipient of a genuine communication, before the discovery of the sentence: taking the kid to McDonalds in the pickup, and he gets to sit UP FRONT, instead of in the back seat, in the middle, as all good yuppie parents know. And he's looking around, thinking he's pretty hot stuff up there in the front seat, and looks over at me, smiles, and says, "Happy."
Not to steal thunder from Baby T. Their I.Q.s at any given month count were no doubt somewhat equal, after making adjustments for girls being smarter.
Roy that's such a brilliant story. If Baby R ever turns to me and says "Happy" it'll a: melt my heart, b: make me have the biggest proudest smile on my face ever c: make me want to squeeze him in the warmest hug or d: all of the above
DEFINITELY D!!!!!!
Definitely D.
Roy, that's so cool and, to top it off, "the collaboration continues to this day". Wow! It doesn't get any better than that.
Mark's first word, other than mmmmm and dadadadada, was chicken. He said something like thchkn, but he was definitely into it. then key. funny what you remember.
Sorry we missed. Wish I'd known you were around sooner. But a week just isn't that long in a working girl's life. I want to retire.
