Back to forward

Now the family has come and gone and it feels pretty empty around here. Even the light feels empty, as it does when the sun is in sidereal Leo. But the bug or frog or whoever it is who croaks like a stick drumming on a tin can is singing in the mangroves tonight and in just over a week we drive back to Nevada and, shortly after that, leave for China. These are the good old days but I never want to forget how it used to be staring out the window at a dead end world.

So I realized I am a sidereal Virgo, instead of a traditional Libra, and I read up on myself. OK. It sounded like me, a little. But so does Libra.

Right. It's pretty easy to identify with any sun sign. Anyway, the merits of astrology aside, what I find interesting is that Sidereal calculations are physically accurate whereas Tropical placements are not. Tropical Astrology is what is commonly used in the West. The placements of the planets in the signs are off by 23°. Ask any astronomer or look for yourself. Download a star map onto your phone and see what constellations the stars are in then compare where they actually are with where Western Astrology places them. There is very little overlap.

Really, I can't say I can read just any sun sign description and say it's like me. I"m nothing like a lot of the descriptions. No one would ever mistake me for a Scorpio, for example. So anyway, I wondered, if it's true, the precession of the equinoxes and all messing up the grand scheme of things, if it doesn't matter as the descriptions and traits assigned to each sign sort of "evolved" along as things shifted.
Did that make sense?

Seems like I have something or other in Virgo. One of the planets. OK, just checked. Both Mercury and Saturn are in Virgo. Maybe that's why I have those Virgo traits.

I misspoke. Not all sun sign descriptions work for me either. I over simplified my point. Sorry.

As for the rest, the grand scheme getting messed up and descriptions evolving, not sure either is the case. My opinion. There are three main indicators in a horoscope, sun sign, rising sign and the aspects between the planets. They all have to be read and interpreted on their own and in relationship to one another. Vedic astrologers add two more measures, Nakshatras (lunar mansions) and Dasas (planetary periods).

In any case, the descriptions of the sun signs and planetary influences do not differ from those in Western Astrology because Western Astrology is derived from Sidereal Astrology. It's just that Western Astrology does not adjust for the progression of the equinox and, at this point, there is a 23 degree difference between the two systems.

Do I "believe" in astrology? Neither yes nor no but I do use it.

And, of course the relationships between the planets does not change, one system to the other. Conjunctions, oppositions, trines, squares etc. same either way. IOW, if you were born with a full moon rising, that doesn't change. You'd be a howling wolf in either system. ;)
