Rajni, is supposed to marry Sheeba, an alliance not approved of by her father. He is killed and goes to Heaven only to learn that his death was a mistake. He is offered another body to inhabit,that of a timid villager whose uncle and aunt are plotting to kill him. He takes up the offer and teaches them a lesson while romancing with Kanaga. But coming into contact with some characters from his earlier life, reminds him of his duties over there too. He solves all problems and all's well that end well.

Welcome to the matinee. At the moment I'm sitting in Dreamer's Cafe in Reno having a cup of coffee and posting this on my crippled old lap top with corrupt Java so, at least until I get home and can use my regular computer, I'll have to do without the graphics, spell checker, even font resizing. I know only the most rudimentary HTML and, on my own, am a crappy speller. Life in the rough.

Nevertheless, it's a special day as one of the rare Roxy regulars is celebrating his birthday this Saturday, something that only happens every seven years, give or take leap years I suppose. I'm not an expert on the calendar. At any rate, this one's for you (it make take a moment to load so be patient) ...

As the Roxy is modeled after the old Saturday afternoon matinee, serial stories are supposed to be a regular feature. Keeps the little darlings clamouring back each week to see what happens next and buy popcorn and bon bons (which, sadly, have since become extinct). I don't have such sinister motives. I just like serials and hope you do too. As there isn't a new episode of The Defenders of Stan yet, I'm going to start a second serial. This one is already complete so we'll be able to power though this one. Five shows...five weeks.

Friday night marked the exact moment of the Autumn Equinox (21:03 hours) and therefore the official beginning of fall so I'm celebrating the occasion all weekend. Unfortunately, although people have observed this event for thousands of years, they haven't done many videos on the subject. At least I only found a few instructive clips on equinox mechanics and a couple of excepts from horribly saccharine "new age" circles jerks. Welcome to the Roxy. Our host today is none other than 20th Century great Orson Wells - actor, writer, director, producer, artist, genius, alcoholic. His performance in the 1938 radio broadcast of H.G. Wells "War of the World's" the day before Halloween is legendary. Millions of people, the greater part of the nation, believing his simulated live news broadcast, panicked thinking Earth had been invaded by mechanized war machines from Mars.

Today the Roxy matinee is coming to you from the lovely town of Tonopah located in the geographic center of the Great Basin, aka Nevada. Last Saturday was basically Werner Herzog day here at the Roxy. First we watched him eat his shoe and then saw his video of aboriginals in the Amazon. Today is Weird Day at the Roxy. A few friends of mine just showed up from Mexico bound for Burning Man, reminding me it's that time of year again. Burning Man, for all it's strut and fret, sham and flim flam, is still a feast for the eyes and, if nothing else, the desert will restore some perspective on the ephemeral nature and tenuous hold we have in the universe. Just a quick note about the feature of the day, "Night Life in Reno". However tame and cliched it looks now, it shocked and outraged a lot of people in it's day. They felt it glamourized "modern behavior" and in reaction pushed for the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930, aka the Hays Code, which started being enforced in 1934. It's a simple plot but almost an hour long so when I played it, I diminished the window to the size of the viewer and half watched it as I surfed other sites.

Saturday at the Roxy extravaganza

Above all, Saturday is a state of mind. It's a time to get down and loosen up. Even I have to lighten up sometimes. A couple of the videos I'm posting today have been around for awhile but I re-watch them from time to time and still enjoy them and if you haven't seen them, you might like them too.

To get things going there's a couple of high thrills sport shorts, then an a rather odd animation which leads to today's dark, somewhat disturbing main feature. Don't worry. It all ends on a happy note. Today is septuple Saturday, so get plenty of pie, popcorn and your favorite beverage and settle in for the show.

If you're like most people, you probably don't like/hate poetry but really .... don't blame Poetry. It's the poets themselves but ... that's a rant for another day.

I watched several and have to say I found them a bit on the grim side. Maybe it's the effect of the long, dark winters. Anyway, they're interesting and well done.

I was taking a little break from editing Driftwork and realized that, my god, it's Saturday ... time for the Saturday Matinee!

I had dig fast but I think this one will do. Lots of great music. Today's matinee is a three part documentary on Stevie Ray Vaughan done by a couple of young Norwegian guys. I don't know where they got all the photos from his childhood, but it looks like they covered a lot of ground. I haven't had a chance to watch all of it but it gets good reviews. I'll have to watch it later but I hope that right now you can ....
